Chao Hacking Visual Demonstration
This document will show you how to hack chao visually. The game being used in this demonstration is Sonic Advance 2, but this will apply for all 3 Sonic Advance games. Just look at the picture, and read the text next to or below it.
Start up your Visual Boy Advance, and click on Open. Browse around for the Sonic ROM you wish to use, and open it. In this case, I will open Sonic Advance 2.
Now go to File, Import, GameShark Snapshot, then browse around for the Snapshot you took or downloaded earlier, and load it.
Now enter the Tiny Chao Garden, hatch your chao, and go to Tools, then Memory Viewer.

Now then, you should see a grid of 2-digit, 4-digit, or 8-digit number's in the center of the window, and a grid of symbols on the right of the window. For what we are doing, we need the 2-digit number's for the grid in the middle of the window, and you should forget the symbol grid exists. If it is in 4-digit, or 8-digit, then look at the top middle of your window. You should see 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit. Change it to 8-bit if it is not allready selected, and forget 16-bit and 32-bit exist as well.

Now for the actual hacking. Let's say you want your chao to be red when it hatches from its egg. If you look to the right of the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit options, you will see a box that you can type in. Type, or copy and paste, the numbers 03003019 for SA1, 03003BD9 for SA2, or 03004AF9 for SPP. Next, click on GO. It will take you to a particular address of the ROM's memory. Next, type in the value 08, in the top left corner of the center grid. Make sure it is the center grid, and not the one on the right. Why you ask? Read Note No. 8. The two number's in the grid that you need to change have been highlighted in black.
After you have made all the changes you want, select the option Automatic Update and click on Refresh. If you dont have Automatic Update selected, then none of the changes you have made will be submitted. Once you have clicked on Refresh, click on Close.
After you are finished making all the changes you want, pause, then select Save & Quit. After the ROM has reseted, go to File, Export, GameShark Snapshot. Save the Snapshot to your preference, and download it back to your Game Boy Advance GameShark or Action Replay. Then load your game, and restore your Snapshot, and save.
There, you have succesfully hacked a chao. Congratulations.
I hope this visual demonstration helped you out. Now go and have some fun with your fake, err, umm, I mean, hacked chao.
